How Chiropractic Treatment Can Help Babies Breastfeed

New Report Shows Correlation Between Breastfeeding & Chiroprctic Care

After a young child is provided subluxation care, she improves her ability to take milk from her mother while breastfeeding.

Chiropractic Care for Breastfeeding

Study shows that subluxations on infant baby helped her to accept breast milk from her mother.

A recent article in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, and Family Health reported the case of an eight week-old baby girl who underwent subluxation based chiropractic care to improve her ability to breastfeed.

According to the article, “The infant received spinal and cranial adjustments and after the third adjustment the patient latched on and breastfed for 20 minutes without any difficulty and she continued to feed normally thereafter.”

Breastfeeding is an innate activity, so inability to do so can be a sign of possible neurological/musculoskeletal impairment. Chiropractor Katie Sleigh explains, “There are several reasons as to why the newborn’s ability to suckle and breastfeed may be compromised. It is estimated that 2.6% of births are complicated by some type of birth trauma. Mechanical forces such as compression, distraction, torsion or a combination of these are sustained during the birth process. These forces can greatly reduce range of motion in the neck and create neurological deficits. This case describes the management of a newborn with breastfeeding difficulties which resolved following the introduction of chiropractic and cranial work. More research is needed to explore this common problem in childhood.”

Despite all the advances of modern birthing procedures, they can still cause trauma and stress to the infant’s cranium and spine. According to a pediatric textbook on manual therapy for children, “When considering injuries and dysfunctions of the spine and its associated structures, the significance of birth trauma is often underestimated, and the resulting symptoms frequently misinterpreted.”

Failing to recognize these biomechanical injuries and their relationship, breastfeeding problems can lead to inadequate treatments. That in turn can cause mothers to get discouraged and many simply stop trying out of frustration.

Chiropractor Jeanne Ohm notes, “In 24 years of practice, it has been my experience that infants presented in our office with breastfeeding difficulties respond favorably with chiropractic care. Providing the mother with effective solutions allowed the mother and child to continue to benefit from this superior practice of bonding and feeding. Among other numerous benefits of chiropractic care for infants, the ability to successfully breastfeed has lifelong consequences for the baby’s future health potential. Including chiropractic care for your newborn may very well be one of the most important choices you make in support of the family wellness lifestyle.”

Some of the most common indicators of difficulty with breastfeeding include inability to latch firmly or sustain sucking; babies that will feed in only one position; and needing to suck 24/7.
